[origin: DE19728494A1] A solar powered evaporator for obtaining potable water from salt, lake, or brackish water has a trough (2) for the raw water. An arrangement to collect solar energy includes a transparent window (4) above the trough (2) to admit sunlight, and on which water vapour from the trough condenses. A trap (11) collects condensate which drips from the window (4). The novelty is that the depth of water in the trough (2) is less than 50 mm.
