[origin: GB2313603A] There is provided a detergent composition suitable for use in laundry and dish washing methods, comprising a cationic ester surfactant and an alkalinity system and wherein a means is provided for delaying the release of said alkalinity system relatively to the release of said cationic ester surfactant. The cationic ester surfactant is preferably a quaternary ammonium compound where one of the alkyl chains is interrupted by an ester-type linkage. The alkalinity system may be coated particles or the alkaline material may be chosen to be slow-dissolving.
