[origin: DE19724388A1] The invention relates to a travel sensor wherein an absolute value of the travel of a mechanical component, e.g. a brake pedal, or a variation in travel can be detected and a corresponding electrical output signal can be produced. The mechanical component (2) is connected to magnetizable strip (8; 8', 8'') which can pass in front of at least one detector (13, 14) in a longitudinal direction. Given sections (11) of the strip (8; 8', 8'') are magnetized with a respectively alternating polarity. As the strip moves (8;8', 8''), polarity changes are detected in order to produce the electrical output signal.
