[origin: GB2314452A] An actuator comprising a pair of similar devices(31) each responsive to electrical signals to generate reciprocatory displacements, and link means (34) coupled to the devices to translate the respective displacements of the devices into a single set of reciprocatory displacements, the coupling between the link means and the devices being such that for each displacement generated by the link means the devices generate displacements in opposite directions. Also disclosed is a lathe employing the above actuator arrangement to accurately move a cutting tool in a reciprocatory manner. Application include manufacture of contact lenses.
