[origin: DE19726328A1] The inventive lighting device has a closed inner area (10) which is connected to its external surroundings by means of an upper ventilation opening (30) and a lower ventilation opening (32). The upper ventilation opening (30) is covered with a mat-shaped insert (36), which is permeable to air and hydrophobic. The upper ventilation opening (30) is arranged in a downward sloping wall (34). A shielding device (40) is provided to protect the upper ventilation opening (30) from splashes of water. A line (60) leading to the undercarriage of the motor vehicle is connected to the lower ventilation opening (32). When the vehicle is drive mode, a pressure differential between the upper ventilation opening (30) and lower ventilation opening (32) is produced so that the inner area (10) is cross-flown from top to bottom. The insert (36) prevents dust and damp from entering into the inner area (10).
