[origin: DE19633240A1] This invention concerns a process for vehicle identification in which a vehicle (F1) within close range effects a data transmission with at least one beacon (3). This data transmission and the data of a sensor (51) permit correlation of the data transmission and vehicle position within the communication zone. The beacon uses the data transmission signal sent from the vehicle (F1) and received by the beacon (3) to determine the relative velocity of the vehicle. The sensor (51) also provides data about the velocity and position of the vehicle. The velocity relationship or several velocity relationships are used to determine the lane and thus the position of the vehicle (F1) sending data. A preferred application is in the deduction of road toll charges or in controlling travel authorization.
