[origin: WO9905953A1] The invention relates to a hand-held appliance for cleaning smooth surfaces, in particular glass panes (GS). Said appliance has a flat box-type support (2) with a handle (6). The support accommodates a replaceable sponge block (5) and a wiping strip (4) situated parallel to and a certain distance away from the sponge block (5). The edges (4K) of the wiping strip protrude obliquely over a covering wall (3) of the support (2). These edges are thus situated substantially in the free surface of the sponge block (5). The covering wall (3) extends into the two corner areas (3E) associated to the wiping strip (4), practically as far as the wiping strip edge (4K). In this way, stablizing projections (7) for the wiping strip (4) are formed.
