[origin: WO9813253A1] The invention pertains to a bicycle pedal with a crank arm at the radially outer end of which a pedal unit is provided in the usual way. The pedal unit can rotate freely in relation to the crank arm about a horizontal transverse axis (1) which is perpendicular to the crank arm. The pedal unit (2, 24, 25) is in addition itself capable of pivoting about a longitudinal axis (32) extending in the direction of travel in the horizontal plane and intersecting with the transverse axis (1). The pedal system also has first connecting elements (30, 35) which can be connected releasably with matching second connecting elements on the cyclist's shoe. The longitudinal axis (32) which allows the pedal to pivot and extends in the bicycle's direction of travel lies either between the pedal unit (2, 24, 25) and the first connecting elements (30, 35) or between the second connecting element and the cyclist's shoe.
