Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0929047A1] A receptacle, such as a card reader (10), is provided for a chip card (70) having card contacts (74). The receptacle includes a housing (12,14) having a card receiving mouth (72). A plurality of receptacle contacts (16) are fixed against movement on the housing and have resilient contact portions (16b) for engaging the card contacts after the card is inserted through the mouth to a fully inserted position. An actuator (20) is movably mounted on the housing (12,14) for movement between an inoperative position and an actuating position. In the inoperative position, the actuator (20) allows the card (70) to be inserted past the contact portions (16b) toward its fully inserted position with substantially zero force on the contact portions. In the actuating position, the actuator (20) biases the card and, thereby, the card contacts (74) into engagement with the contact portions of the receptacle contacts. The actuator (20) includes a biasing portion (62) for engaging the card (70) and biasing the card contacts against the contact portions (16b) of the receptacle contacts (16). The actuator (20) includes an actuating portion (64) engageable by the card when at its fully inserted position to move the actuator from its inoperative position to its actuating position. <IMAGE>
