[origin: EP0933747A2] The system has a switch in the transmitting vehicle (3) which activates a warning signal transmitter depending on the traffic situation. The signal is received by other vehicles (9-14) with receivers. An evaluation circuit in a receiving vehicle produces an estimated value for the distance between the transmitting and receiving vehicles from the reception field strength and influences functions in the receiving vehicle accordingly. The transmitter transmits different calibration signals with staged transmission powers and the number of calibration signals which can be received in the receiving vehicle is extracted for use in estimating the distance.
