[origin: EP0934845A2] Through an electronic control as the vehicles follow one another at controlled distance when the speed (v) understeps a predetermined first threshold (S1) with a further reduction in the speed (v) of the leading vehicle the deceleration capacity is reduced independently of observing a following distance so that the driver becomes aware and undertakes manual control. The momentarily predetermined following distance (d1) is raised at first when the speed understeps a predetermined second threshold which is greater than the first.
