The positions of the guide wall sections are fixed, and they rotate to advance the sliver material, or at least one wall section has a variable position through sliding, swinging, etc. The walls of a guide are parallel to each other. A guide and a sliver funnel alternate behind each other. The guide is a web funnel at the outlet from a carding machine or a sliver funnel (34) at the end of a drawing unit, located in front of two take-off rollers (31,32). The guide (34) works with a measuring unit (40) to register the thickness of the sliver.
