[origin: DE19646069A1] In motor vehicles fitted with overlay steering mechanisms comprising a gearbox (2) and a steering gearbox (4), substantial amounts of torque flow from the gearbox inlet (12) to the steering gearbox (4) when driving around bends. This results in a loss of speed during cornering. According to the method described, the torque flow to the steering gearbox (4) is preferably automatically compensated by higher driving unit torque. Driving performance can be enhanced during cornering without needing to design the gearbox (2) for higher input torque. The principle disclosed in the invention can be used for other applications.
