[origin: WO9914776A1] A compact current limiting circuit breaker utilizing two pairs of series connected contacts is equipped with a current limiter arranged in parallel with the second pair of contacts for improved overcurrent protection. Upon the occurrence of contact separation an arc is drawn at the first pair of contacts, but not the second. The presence of the polymer current limiter in parallel with the second pair of contacts causes the overcurrent to commutate into the polymer current limiter immediately upon separation of the second contacts. A means for enhancing the dielectric strength across the second pair of open contacts prevents an arc strike from shunting out the polymer current limiter during a high available short circuit.
