The invention seeks to reduce the overall dimension, i.e. the feed sheet pile/feed sheet conveyor drum spacing, while at the same time increasing the travel acceleration of the pre-gripper (22). According to the invention, this is performed in that an ascending feed table (12) extends directly to a stop (9) limiting the pile (1), before the sheet pile (1) in the travelling direction of the sheets (2), a conveying element (8) configured as lever arm conveys the sheets (2) up to the lay marks (16) of the feed table (12), said conveying element being on the upper part of the front edge of the sheet stacked in the feed pile, and a pre-gripper (22) configured as a lever arm conveys the sheet (2) from the lay marks (16) to the sheet conveyor drum (13), said pre-gripper being underneath the plane of the feed table (12). The rotational point (7) of the conveyor element (8), the sheet release/transfer point from the conveyor element (8) to the pre-gripper (22) and the pivoting point (5) of the pre-gripper (22) lie in a straight or nearly straight line.
