Abstract (en)
[origin: EP0942435A1] A container (1) for transporting radioactive materials has a radiation shield in the form of a series of adjoining hollow one-piece metal housings (4) bolted to the outer wall of the container and filled with a neutron absorbing material (10). Each housing is tubular in shape and polygonal in cross-section, preferably with four sides. The metal used to make it is aluminum, copper or an alloy of these, and it can have external cooling fins (6). Each housing also contains a plate (8,9) of a heavy metal, preferably lead, to act as a gamma radiation screen and situated close to the container wall.
