[origin: DE19705891C1] The method involves separating oversized items (30) from the unsorted mail (10), marked with an identity (ID) number (110) which relates to the delivery address, machine sorted (50) and stored (70) by the ID number. Standard sized items (10) and cards (20), one marked with the ID number for each oversized item, are mechanically sorted by address into batches (60). The sorted oversized items are inserted in the correct places in the batches, as indicated by the ID cards. The ID cards can be of a conspicuous colour and the ID can be marked for both machine and manual reading.
