[origin: WO9920323A1] The invention is a method to assist in automatically identifying whether a particular fluid collection cassette (10) such as a posterior surgical fluid collection cassette or an anterior surgical fluid collection cassette. A fluid collection cassette (10) has a material (40, 44) disposed on, within, or inside said fluid collection cassette in at least one predetermined location (38, 42). When the fluid collection cassette (10) is inserted into a housing (56), a sensor (58, 60) attached to the housing (56) senses the existence, or non-existence of the material (40, 44) and sends a signal conveying the information to a main controller. As a result, the type of fluid collection cassette may be determined.
