[origin: WO9917326A1] During production of an electron gun, and prior to assembly of the gun, the surface of the cathode is cleaned in a clean room and provided with a protective layer of oxide. A protective layer having substantially no contaminations is provided in this way. The oxide layer is removed again after the assembly and before the cathode ray tube is vacuum-exhausted.
