Abstract (en)
A high pressure discharge lamp includes an arc tube comprising a tubular body (388) of translucent refractory material, end walls (382) closing the ends of the body, and electrodes (390) supported in the end walls. The arc tube contains a metal halide for creating an arc plasma, the metal halide forming a molten pool during operation of the lamp. The end walls (382) are formed with an annular well (386) for containing the metal pool, and the wall (383,388) of the arc tube surrounding the well is thicker than the wall of the tubular body (388).
