Abstract (en)

[origin: DE19654450A1] The invention relates to a method for determining the times when it will be necessary to change, or add to, the engine oil in a motor vehicle engine, in relation to detected engine operating parameters. According to the invention, at least one engine operating parameter relevant to the ageing of engine oil and the number of engine r.p.m. are determined on a continuous basis. On the basis of the values obtained, an imaginary distance is calculated by evaluative combination of the number of engine r.p.m. detected with evaluation factors dependent on the detected engine operating parameter(s) relevant to the ageing of engine oil, in accordance with a predefinable combination relation. From this imaginary distance, the distance still to be driven until it is next necessary to change, or add to, the engine oil is calculated by subtracting the imaginary distance from a predefined total potential distance.
