[origin: WO9746991A1] A system for displaying data which describes the constituent elemnts of a song, and facilitates a musicians ability to learn to play the song on an instrument. The basic constituent elements of the song comprise its chords, or notes, and any accompanying lyrics. Each of these elements of the song is identified and recorded in a file (20), along with the corresponding time that the elements occur in the performance of the song. During playback of the song, the elements in the song file (20) are correlated with the time of performance, and displayed to the musician in synchronism on the display (18, 24). Additional features permit the musician to call up graphic displays of appropriate fingering charts or tablature for each chord, as well as to transpose the song from one key to another.
