A method for checking the selection of the needles of a needle cylinder in knitting machines particularly for hosiery and the like comprising a needle cylinder (1) on the cylindrical surface of which a plurality of axial slots (2) are provided, each of which accommodates a needle (13) and at least one selection element, selectors constituted by permanent magnets and coils which laterally face the needle cylinder (1) at the level of the selection elements and selection (3) and sensor (4) means, the particularity of the method consisting in that it comprises the steps of: determining the relative position of the selection means (3) and of sensor means (4) located alternately with respect to the selection means (3), so as to determine the number of selection elements present between the position of the selection means (3) and the position of the sensor means (4); detecting, through the sensor means (4), the transit of the selection elements selected by the selection means (3); sampling the signals acquired by the sensor means and comparing the sampled signals acquired by the sensor means (4) with the corresponding control signals sent to the selection means (3) in order to check the correct selection of the selection elements. <IMAGE>
