[origin: EP0963910A1] In the first packing stage the stack (2) of papers are wrapped so that the foil (3) projects on both sides beyond the covered sides of the stack and in the second packing stage the stacks having a stacking height (d1) greater than a predetermined boundary stack height are wrapped round by a band (4) and the stacks having a stack height (d2) smaller than the predetermined height are packed by welding the foil areas projecting over the top and bottom sides of the stack whereby a wrapping band can either be added or omitted. Independent claim describes apparatus having welding means for welding projecting areas of foil wherein control means control the welding device dependent on the stack height.
