[origin: GB2323520A] A composite sock comprises an inner stretchable fabric envelope 50, a bag-like barrier component 100 having a liquid water impermeable/water vapour permeable membrane 120, and an outer stretchable fabric envelope 200. The inner, barrier and outer layers are attached to each other, in one embodiment by means of spaced apart dots of adhesive. The inner layer 50 may have elastic yarns 60 laid-in in the courses 65, circumferentially of the sock to enhance the ability of the sock to recover its shape after stretching. The membrane 120 may be reinforced by a fabric support 140. In a further embodiment, the outer fabric layer may be omitted, and, in certain regions of the sock (e.g. in the toe-to-calf longitudinal direction), the support fabric may serve to prevent the barrier component from stretching.
