[origin: WO9925557A1] A printer (10) employs electrostatic grippers (12, 14, and 16) to advance paper (18) past a print head (22) that forms capillaries (33) in which capillary action ordinarily retains hot-melt ink and prevents it from marking the paper. When the paper is to be marked, a potential difference is applied to electrodes (40 and 42) to create electric-field gradients that cause the ink to bulge from the capillary outlet and mark the paper.
