[origin: EP0965684A2] The assembly (10) to apply a liquid or paste coating (21) to the surface of a moving web (12), of paper or cardboard, has a counter roller (14) to carry the web (12) between it and an applicator roller (20). The coated web (12) passes on to and round the surface of a further counter roller (16) at a facing doctor (22) to smooth the applied coating. The surface qualities of the two counter rollers (14,16) are set against each other so that the web (12) is given a relative movement at least in relation to the first counter roller (14). At least one counter unit is a roller (14,16) or a continuous belt and especially round a support shoe at the applicator and/or coating doctor. At least the surface (14a) of the first counter roller (14) meets the expression: 4 mm square root of (t x hb x c) 13 mm where t is the thickness of the roller surface layer or cladding in mm; hB the surface hardness in P and J (RTM; hardness test of Pusey and Jones); c a constant of 1 mm divided by 25.4 P and J. The hardness of the surface (14a) of the first counter roller (14) is at least 40 P and J. The second counter roller (16) has a surface (16a) with a hardness of 50-100 P and J and preferably 60-80 P and J. The surface (14a) of the first counter roller (14) has a lower and not insignificant friction coefficient ( mu ) than the surface (16a) of the second counter roller (16), of maximum 0.45, preferably max. 0.15. The first counter roller (14) has a surface (14a) of chrome, Chrome-Slick (RTM) or ceramic. The second counter roller (16) has a rougher surface (16a), with a mean roughness depth of 1.5-63.0 mu m and pref. 6.3-30.0 mu m. The gap (a) between the axes (A,B) of the two counter rollers (14,16) meets the expression: 555 mm ≤ a ≤ 0.5 x ((Vmax + Vmin) divided by Vmax) x (W divided by D) x 1500 mm where Vmax is the maximum running speed of the web (12); Vmin the minimum running speed of the web (12); W the web width; D the diameter of the second counter roller (16).
