[origin: DE19710033C1] According to the invention, several laser diodes (1) or other suitable optical sources of varying emission wavelengths ( lambda k) are impressed with various useful signals in the base band or in the intermediate frequency range and the wavelength channels (xk) thus formed are brought together. An external high threshold frequency modulator (4) is included the wavelength multiplex system. Said modulator is controlled according to the desired microwave or millimeter wave subcarrier frequency (fsub) or subharmonic thereof so that modulation of all wavelength channels (xk) is converted upwards. The individual wavelength channels (xk) are wavelength selectably outcoupled to photodiodes (8) or other direct receivers which deliver the selected modulated useful signal to the subcarrier (Pn,sub).
