Abstract (en)
A satellite cellular mobile telecommunications system includes a satellite (3a) that transmits a number of spot beams (31) which constitute cells that sweep over the surface of the earth as the satellite moves in its orbit. A broadcast channel (BCCH) is transmitted to all user terminals (UTs) within an individual cell. The BCCH contains timing data concerning an impending update to an operational parameter for the UTs in the cell. Each UT responds to the timing information to update the parameter at the appointed time. The change can be to any one of the following: PCH, BCCH, RACH, AGCH, HPN channel and neighbouring cell BCCHs. The user terminal may be configured to detect the BCCH in idle mode windows (W) spaced apart in time, in order to save battery power. <IMAGE>
