[origin: WO9841940A1] A transaction processing system (1) communicates with point-of-sale terminals (8) via a communications sub-system (3) which performs communications and protocol routing, and a transaction logic sub-system (4) which performs transaction logic-based routing. Transaction signals are processed internally in the system on a processor (4(b)) or are routed to external processors (10). Message traffic is minimised by operation of incoming partners (20) and associated outgoing partners (23) writing data to a variable database (7(a)) and retrieving this data if required at a subsequent stage in the process.
