[origin: WO9839454A1] This invention relates to a method of modulating the biomass of plants comprising incorporating into the genome of a said plant a DNA which modulates the production or function of an endogenous plant cinnamoyl CoA reductase gene (CCR). The gene for CCR is involved in the production of lignin in plants. Its modulation can be obtained by gene silencing via sense or antisense downregulation or cosuppression.
