[origin: DE19712785C1] The method involves determining a frequency distribution of the motion vectors or their components of processed pixels (BBE). A trial position (SP) dependent upon this distribution is worked out and an error amount for the original image element (OBE), in that position, is found. With the error amount the similarity between this and a reference pixel (RBE) is described. A number of trial positions and reference pixels, processed in a sequence given by the frequency distribution, are evacuated. The method is applied to each original element of the image to be encoded, and a reference pixel.
