Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9942878A1] The invention relates to an overload protection system for avoiding damage to optical components (3) caused by an excessive light output of a light source (2) and especially for protecting a glass fibre system used to transmit laser light (5). Said system comprises an outcoupling device (4) positioned in the optical path (6) between the light source (2) and the optical component (3) for coupling out a small fraction of the light, a detector (7) for detecting the light intensity of the outcoupled light, an electronic evaluation unit (8) for comparing the detected light intensity with a predefinable maximum value and a device (9) for reducing the light output or switching off the light incident on the optical component (3) if the maximum value is exceeded.
