[origin: EP0926704A1] The flat signal lamp (1) has a discharge envelope which is partially transparent to visible radiation containing a gas filling, with a dielectric layer between the latter and at least one discharge electrode (9a,9k) for providing a dielectrically impeded discharge within the discharge envelope, one boundary surface of which provides the signal output surface. A number of parallel anode and cathode electrodes may be applied to the surface of the discharge envelope facing the signal output surface. An Independent claim for a traffic signal employing a flat signal lamp is also included.
