Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0976640A2] The level crossing, equipped with train approach warning devices (22, 24) and half-barriers (14, 16), also has video cameras (26, 28, 30, 32) mounted on poles to provide image information to a computer (34). Image analysis software, including stereoscopic processing, is used to determine the nature of any obstacle on the crossing and a controller (36) then sends speed control or braking commands as necessary to an approaching train via the usual track communication link (40). Preferably, pixels received from the video cameras are compared with at least one threshold value to determine obstacle contour.
