Abstract (en)
[origin: EP0978431A1] The secondary, or parking, brakes are applied by tightening cables wound on a drum rotated by a geared motor. The motor supply is derived via a potentiometer type position sensor (6) associated with two control elements sliding on guide ribs in a case (L), set flush with the dashboard, within the driver's reach. The upper element (13), directly connected to the sensor, has a transverse interior partition (15), the lower, a rear upstand (16) blocking this partition. The motor current is varied by the sensor so as to make the brake cable tension proportional to the displacement of the upper element. With both elements flush with the case front, the brake is released. To apply it, the driver pushes forward (P) the upper element, incidentally exposing a finger-hole (17) in the lower, which he or she may later use to pull forward the lower element. The latter action causes the rear upstand (16) to displace the upper partition, resetting the upper element, and so releasing the brake, while an internal return spring resets the lower also. For maneuvers calling for intermediate brake effort, e.g. hill starts, the driver easily manipulates the two elements to vary the effort as required.
