[origin: EP0978811A2] The method involves determination of journey times (t(x;n)) for vehicles (6) on at least one route section (e.g. n) of a motorway or road (1). For given vehicles the respective times for entry into or exit from the route section, and individual journey times, or journey times averaged over a number of vehicles, an actual average journey time over the route section are determined out of the different of the exit time to the entry time. At certain monitoring or control points on the route section individual vehicles in the flow of traffic are automatically optically detected and the obtained video information on individual vehicles is converted into image data. Time-sequential image data sets are obtained and then temporarily stored and data sets for entry into, are continuously compared with those for exit from, a route section, for any agreement of their image data. When agreement is established in two data sets, the individual journey time (t(x;n)) is derived from the difference of time information (62) of theses data sets.
