[origin: DE19700594A1] The invention concerns a ladder with strings (1, 2), of which at least one string (1) can be varied in length by an extension device (6) in order to adapt the ladder to sloping support surfaces. The ladder further comprises an adjusting device and has a plurality of apertures, depressions or recesses. A locking member (5), provided with an actuating device, is guided through the string (1) and can be selectively inserted and removed with its first end, which is remote from the actuating device, into and from the apertures, depressions or recesses. The locking member (5) is also guided through another string (2) on which the actuating device is disposed. The actuating device is supported on the string (2) and co-operates with the second locking end.
