Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9944084A1] A massproducible field-distribution conversion optical fiber for free converting an elliptic field distribution to a circular field distribution and vice versa and a laser diode module comprising the optical fiber are disclosed. Let the optical axis of an optical fiber (1) be Z and the two axes perpendicular to each other and to the Z axis be X and Y, and assume that both the refractive index distributions of a core (2) along the axes X and Y have parabolic index profiles and that the gradients of the refractive index distributions in the X and Y directions are different from each other. The light wave propagated in the X-Z plane and the light wave propagated in the X-Y plane are varied in the Z direction periodically, the periods are made different from each other, and the cross-sectional shape of the field distribution in the optical fiber (1) is periodically changed. The value of the length of the optical fiber (1) is determined to be substantially the same as a common multiple of one-fourth of the period of the variation of the field distribution in the Z direction of the light wave propagated in the X-Z plane and one-fourth of the period of the variation of the field distribution in the Z direction of the light wave propagated in the Y-Z plane. Hence the light wave incident on the input side (8) of the optical fiber (1) and having an elliptic field distribution is converted to a light wave having a circular field distribution and is output from the output side (9).
