Apparatus to wind into a roll an elastic and stretch knitted fabric, on leaving the knitter, has a roller (8) with an axial winding mechanism. The roller has an outer mantle surface (10) which distorts to absorb the radial forces developed while the fabric (6) is wound into a roll (9). The transmission of the winding coupling distributes the stiffness between the roller and the outer layers. Apparatus to wind into a roll an elastic and stretch knitted fabric, on leaving the knitter, has a roller (8) with an axial winding mechanism. The distorting surface (10) of the roller (8) has a hardness or stiffness which is less than the wound fabric roll (9) by 1.5 times. The outer surface (10) of the roller (8) is an elastic foam, such as of sponge rubber with a density of 420 kg/m3>. With a roller (8) diameter of 7-8 cm, the foam rubber mantle layer (10) has a thickness of at least 4 cm. The foam rubber mantle layer (10) has a longitudinal opening (12), to allow foam movement before it is crushed. Where the roller mantle is composed of a number of foam rubber layers, their longitudinal openings have an angular offset between them. The distorting roller mantle can also be composed of a number of longitudinal slats giving a spring effect, or resting on springs to take up the radial winding forces. Or it is a pliable envelope which can be inflated by compressed air, under control.
