[origin: EP0983984A2] A reaction temperature of 200-300 degrees C, with a weight ratio of (catalyst metal):(acetal) = less than 0.1 (for suspension methods) is used in the reductive cleavage of linear and cyclic acetals, especially formals, in aqueous, formate-containing media in presence of a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen at 0.1-30 MPa and pH below 7.
