[origin: DE19756203A1] At least one press in the forming section of the wet end of a machine making a web of fibrous material (especially paper or paper board) is a long nip press (20) having a nip which is elongated in the direction (L) of web travel. The press nip is provided in an area in which the dry solids content of the formed web (10) entering the press nip is less than or equal to 15%, and preferably less than or equal to 12%. Preferably either one (12) or both of the forming wires passes through the press nip, or the web may be fed to the nip by a water-removing transfer belt which may be a felt, a wire, and/or a perforated belt. Alternatively, the web may be conveyed through the nip between a symmetrical configuration of a fine-weave support belt, a water-removing belt, and an impermeable press belt on either side. The support belt may be a felt or a wire.
