Abstract (en)
A high pressure discharge lamp has an elongated discharge vessel (2) which defines an axial axis of symmetry and surrounds a discharge volume. Two electrodes (6) protrude on the axis. The vessel is cylindrical in the radial direction. The discharge vessel has in a limited region that includes the coldest spot, a reflecting coating, radially asymmetric. The coating is a metallic or non-metallic layer or is a layer roughed up by sand blasting or etching. The coating possesses an axial length of at least 30% of the discharge volume and actually extends over the whole discharge volume in the axial direction. In the radial direction, the coating includes a maximum central angle of at least 30 and no more than 180.
