[origin: WO9857721A1] Commercially available 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol is processed by reduction, hydrogenation, recrystallization, ion exchange treatment, fractional distillation, base treatment, aqueous extraction, vacuum stripping, nitrogen sparging, or combinations thereof to improve its odor by reducing the gas phase concentrations of odorant materials typically found in commercially available 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol. The resulting 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol having improved odor is employed in various fabric softening compositions.
