Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0992964A2] The system has a processor unit (8) integrated in the housing of each signal generator unit. The processor unit can take over as the main controller for other connected signal generators in the traffic signal system. The signal generator has three lights (1), with a passive infrared detector (4) to detect vehicle movement. Further detectors are located at ground level e.g. a video camera (5). The detectors are arranged to the front and back of the traffic light. A transmit/receive antenna (6) is located on the light unit. The processor unit (8) has input and outputs connections, with bi-directional connection to the light signal control (7). The processor unit (8) transmits control signals to the light signal control to activate the lights according to a signal program. The processor unit can receive or call up control signals from the light signal control (7) to monitor the light functioning. It also has a communication unit (11) for bi- directional remote data communication with spatially separate traffic light units. It functions at one traffic light, as the master for other connected slave light signal units.
