[origin: WO9902008A1] According to the invention, permanent virtual ATM connections (PCV, SPVC) are set up between the components (KE, NT, PABX) of a time multiplex-oriented communications network (KN) for communications relations. The current use or non-use of a connection (PCV, SPVC) which has been set up is indicated by a signal requesting the required transmission rate or a low transmission rate (BR). The resources required in the ATM communications network (KN-ATM) are then made available or released by virtue of said signal. This enables a more efficient use of the resources of said ATM communications network.
