[origin: WO9904169A1] The invention relates to a method and a device for compressing an industrial gas, such as natural gas, from an input pressure to a higher output pressure. The industrial gas is first preheated and then heated using externally supplied heat energy. This heated industrial gas drives a turbine (4) during which process the gas expands to a pressure below the input pressure. The industrial gas which has expanded in the turbine (4) heats the industrial gas to be preheated and is then compressed to the output pressure by means of a compressor (2), said compressor being driven by the turbine (4) and by external energy. The inventive method and device provide a means of achieving a higher overall degree of efficiency by using the waste heat of the gas turbine (15), especially when combined with a conventional gas turbine (15).
