[origin: EP0997567A1] The sewing machine attachment registers the end of a tubular fabric workpiece has a position monitor with light sensors linked to a control with light transmitters and receivers flanking fabric movement path. The sewing machine attachment registers the end of a tubular fabric workpiece (4) in the direction of travel. The light sensors are across the direction of fabric (W) movement, with light transmitters (84-86) and receivers (94-96) above and below the fabric movement path (7). The light sensors (6) register the intensity of the light passing through the fabric (W), to be assessed by the control. The control uses the data from the outermost light sensor (61) at the fabric side as reference data, for comparison with the light data from the other sensors. The change in the light value derived from the comparison at another sensor (6) indicates the end (F) of the fabric (W), and the sewing machine drive is controlled accordingly. The position monitor (3) has a number of light sensors (6) and preferably six. Their light transmitters (84-86) and receivers (94-96) are each assembled into installation units. The light transmission section forms a common light emitting beam.
