[origin: WO9906798A1] The invention concerns a portable navigation apparatus comprising a data memory wherein are stored data related to the description of a predetermined geographical region, a display system for displaying said data in the form of a map, a GPS unit for receiving GPS satellite signals, a logic for processing said signals, a central computer unit for displaying the apparatus geographical position in accordance with the GPS signals, a control device, a power supplying device and a case. Said navigation apparatus is characterised in that it further comprises a data-receiving system for reception without contact of data related to the description of a predetermined geographical region. The invention also concerns a navigation method which implies being equipped with such a portable navigation apparatus which enables, by selecting an operational mode by actuating the control device, the display of said data on a screen, in the form of a map, and, by receiving GPS satellite signals by means of a GPS unit and also by processing said signals by means of a logic, the display, at will, of the geographical position of the navigation apparatus in accordance with the GPS signals and/or personal data concerning the sportsman himself, data related to the description of the predetermined geographical position being loaded without contact in the data memory, by means of a data reception system. The navigation apparatus enables in different embodiments to practise sports, such as ski-ing, orienteering, hiking, mountaineering, swimming, diving, surfing and paraflying or hang gliding in an unfamiliar environment.
