[origin: WO9907658A1] This invention relates to a method of preparing and purifying gem-dihaloalkanes in high yield and with minimal decomposition. The preparation consists essentially of halogenating a ketone with a halogenating agent and then purifying the resulting gem-dihaloalkane by vacuum distillation from the reaction mixture. In one preferred embodiment, 1,1-dichloro-1-cyclopropylethane is prepared and purified in good yield. Certain gem-dihaloalkanes are used as intermediates for the synthesis of novel HIV reverse transcription inhibitors.
